The 71st oldest town in Connecticut. East Hampton, was originally named Chatham in 1767, from the importance of its shipbuilding in allusion to Chatham, England. It was incorporated from Middletown in October 1767. The name changed to East Hampton by an act of the General Assembly on May 4, 1915.
