Cole W. Wilde Trout Management Area

Connecticut State Forest

in Willington and Tolland, CT

Parking: At the I-84 Westbound rest stop in Willington, CT

Trail Map

The primary purpose of this property is to encourage novice fly fishers with an accessible catch and release only area.  Starting and the mouth of Roaring Brook and heading down-stream, the Cole W. Wilde Trout Management Area offers three miles along the Willimantic River for year round fly-fishing.

‘Fly Fishing Only’ paths extend in both directions from the rest stop continuing until spots where erosion has made the steep banks impassable, otherwise they would likely connect with more of the Nye-Holman State Forest.  There is also the remains of the former Red Bridge (1800s) where the Center Turnpike crossed the river on route from Tolland Courthouse to Dudley, Massachusetts.

History:

One of Connecticut’s Trout Management Areas since at least 1993, the 1,000ft of the area underwent restoration in 2001 to increase habitat areas for trout.
