The H.E. Preston Nature Sanctuary is just a short just under a mile loop down to the Little River and back. The trail starts off on a field access road leading to an active agricultural field.
On my very first visit a farmer was sitting on his tractor eating his lunch and gave a wave as I started my hike. Crossing over the field off to the right to the northwest corner the trail reenters the woods and starts a slow descent to the Little River. There is a small bench along the river.
The trail then returns uphill through swaths of ferns. It passes a giant boulder before returning the field and there is a small canister with a logbook at the edge.
History:
Donated by Ellen Preston in 1977 and 1988 it is named in honor of her husband. It was first offered to the Nature Conservancy who thought that it would be better served by a local organization. It became the second major acquisition outside of Mansfield for Joshua’s Trust.
