Hemphill Woods is broken into two parcels split by Old Canterbury Rd. The hiking trail is on the eastern side and is a 1.25 mile loop that passes through wooded terrain and numerous stone walls.
An interesting highlight of the property is the vertical rocks placed on the some of the stone walls who’s tops are chipped down to be concave. It’s something I’ve never seen anywhere else and I read it’s thought that they were used as height extenders for animal pastures though the Joshua’s Trust site no longer includes this tidbit.
The loop is an enjoyable short walk that changes elevation gradually and only has one or two spots that get muddy. The adjacent private property however is obsequious about their No Trespassing signs placing them on multiple trees each just a few feet apart anywhere the trail nears the property line to an almost comical amount.
History:
Donated by Lowry, Clara, and Thomas Hemphill in 2012. An additional acre was added in 2019 from a donation by Abigail Fenn and Bruce Kittredge.
