Trail Map Trails: 1.9 miles Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Starting from Barlow Mill Road this section starts along Bigelow Brook and then makes a long and steep climb to Walker Mountain. When I hiked this section on my thru hike of the Nipmuck Trail, it was the only section I hadn’t hiked before and knew little about it.
As the climbs continued I joked to myself that I should be coming out of the tree line soon, then just up ahead on the trail was a sign for a spur to Walker Mountain. I followed the spur trail for about .2 miles enough to find a sign stating it was a Hull Forest Products protected area. I guessed the end of the spur wasn’t much further but decided to turn around since I had several more miles of my thru hike left. There may be an overlook here, but I don’t know until my next visit.
The trail heads towards Coye Hill the highest elevation along the Nipmuck Trail, but likely misses the summit. Then the trail descends through the Yale Forestry School which is marked with numbered poles and many flagging stakes. There is also a lot of crude graffiti on the trail side rocks unfortunately.
The trail bottoms out at an outdoor classroom to cross Rt. 171 and into Bigelow Hollow.
