Hiking

The Mattabesett Trail through the property has the feel of a Rails-to-Trails but may just be an old town road. I was hiking the New England Trail north bound and entered the property from Bell St. The trail is wide and flat and soon comes in view of the pond at its dam on the eastern side. The fall the colors were bright around the pond and ducks were abundant.

The trail crosses and aging bridge over the pond’s inflow and continues on to Atkins Road.

There appears to be short spur trails on the north end of the property off Sawmill Road, but I haven’t explored these.

Heading South: 1.2 mile road walk from Wesleyen Woods

Heading North: 0.4 mile road walk to Wilcox Woods

History

The land trust acquired the property from the Mattabesek Audubon Society in July 2002.

The 12-foot dam was constructed in 1875 for irrigation purposes.
