Chittenden Park serves as the southern gateway for the New England Trail. Sitting on Long Island Sound, the park doesn’t offer any true hiking trails but has a boardwalk to the sound, a small area along the water, ballfields, and bocce ball courts.
The park is the southern terminus for the New England Trail and this section falls under the blue blaze Menunkatuck Trail portion. A viewing platform and boardwalk takes you from Long Island Sound into the ball fields of the park.
Next section: 3.7 mile road walk (mostly sidwalks) passing through Guilford Station, past the Henry Whitfield Museum, and over I-95 until reaching the East River Preserve
The original property was known as Chittenden Beach, purchased by the town in 1945 and became the first public beach for Guilford residents. The Town of Guilford expanded the property with purchases in 1960 to include the modern day ballfields.
