One of five sections of the Nehantic State Forest, this East Lyme Block is crossed with wide forest roads some of which are un-gated and accessible to cars.  Trails have certainly expanded since the trail map above was last updated in 2010 though they remain unblazed.

This block also contains a 3.4 mile section of the Richard H. Goodwin Trail between Hartman Park and the Yale Engineering Camp property.

There aren’t many highlights to the forest that I’ve discovered so far aside from its remote feel, bold rock faces, and active beaver marshes.

History:

From the DEEP site, “The forest takes its name from the Nehantic Indians, whose ranging grounds once extended from Wecapaug Brook, in what is now Rhode Island, to the Connecticut River. Shortly before the settlers arrived the Pequots had invaded Nehantic territory and annexed about half of the land claimed by the tribe.”
