Timberlin Park
348.29 acres in Berlin, CT
Parking: Small pull-offs along Marjorie Moore Rd, Berlin, CT
Trail Map Trails: 2.24 miles Rating: ★★☆☆☆
This quiet park, tucked behind the more popular golf course, features picnic areas, a pavilion, and over 2 miles of trails including a 0.86 mile section of the blue blaze Metacomet Trail part of the 235 mile New England Trail.
From my visits here it seems the most popular hiking path is actually the paved road from the golf course into the park and back. Multiple people walking the road, talking on the phone or walking dogs for a short easy out and back.
Green Loop
Leaving the picnic area the trail cross a steel bridge built as an Eagle Scout project by Sean Haber. The trail follows the stream for a bit and over a short hill to join the Metacomet. I jumped onto the blue blaze trail and didn’t complete the loop options.
Metacomet / New England Trail
From the south the trail enters behind the guardrail at the forested edge of the golf course. The trail descends a rocky stretch next to a fairway into a forest of tall pines. There is a connection to the local loop before turning hard left and beginning a rocky climb around the curve of Short Mountain. A couple of brief window overlooks before the true ledge view northwest over Southington.
The trail then continues over the mountain and down a steep slope and a ‘Trash Depot’ at the back of hiker friendly private property.
Heading North: 0.2 mile road walk to Ragged Mountain
Heading South: 1.5 mile road walk coming from Castle Craig
The town acquired the property in 1968.
