Hiking

I’d been to Salem to hike several times completing the Salem Land Trust properties and yet never knew there were trails here.  Likely they were fairly unofficial old woods roads until Ben Morrow’s Eagle Scout project created the Salem Connector Trail between Salem Community Park and Volunteer Field.

From the Community Park the trail has options to loop around the large corn field but the Connector heads into the woods and down to cross over Fraser Brook in either direction.  These trails are largely old woods roads, but pass huge rock piles, a small dam overflow, and very hilly terrain.

Unfortunately, like at Cross Farms or Ecker Hill there’s a good chance the trails will begin to fade and be subsumed as the disc golf course becomes more and more popular.

Disc Golf

For beginners this 18-hole course is tough, but it’s so well crafted that I love it.  Mainly tight wooded holes but interesting shot shapes and great use of the terrain designed by Rob LeMire.  It had only officially been open for 4 days on my visit and the parking area was over half full.  We saw several other players but thankfully never felt backed up or crowded.

Holes range from 233 to 613ft with only one hole mostly open.

History:

The property was purchased by the town in July 2005 for $1.2 million.  The property briefly had a 19 hole course that was closed and redone into its current state.
