Blue Flag Meadow is a simple 1.2 mile loop trail around a 25 acre unnamed pond. The trail can either be accessed from the northern portion of Kenyon Rd or from the Air Line Trail along its southern border.
From the Kenyon Rd trailhead, after passing through former pasture and a great viewing bench the trail heads into maturing woodlands as it circles the pond’s border. It is fairly easy to follow but roughly maintained especially along the backside of the loop. There are two wooden bridges crossing the pond inflow and the outflow headwaters of the Little River. The one crossing the Little River outflow was built by Eagle Scout Travis Jacobson in 2017. Coming out of the loop you’ll see the timber harvest clearing the lower portion of the meadow with only a handful of trees remaining.
History:
Preserved by Wolf Den Land Trust in 2007 when it was donated by Wendell and Alison Davis. The park is named for the native iris that blooms along the pond edges.
Since 2018, it has been enrolled in a cooperative management program called the Young Forest Initiative, sponsored by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Wildlife Management Institute. A 9-acre timber harvest to regenerate young forest and a significant invasive plant control effort have been part of this program.
