Portland Reservoir is open to the public with easy hiking trails though the reservoir is off limits for any kind of water activity. The property provides access to the adjacent Meshomasic State Forest for longer hike options including onto the blue blaze Shenipsit for long loops.
Hiking
The main trail here is the Reservoir Rim Trail loop which starts either to the left of the reservoir or through the gate to the right of the trailhead kiosk.
The trail is easy walking on wide path for nearly the entire length, but beaver activity has long affected the trails here flooding at least two spots. If you care about dry feet you’ll have to walk on logs to cross at least one of the flooded sections or just turn around at whichever one you decide isn’t worth it. The main flooded area is at the backside of the Rim loop where it crosses Reservoir Brook.
There are beautiful views along the reservoir, tall pines in the woods, and small stream water features making this an excellent easy hike if it weren’t for those pesky beavers.
