The Dewey-Granby Oak is one of the oldest known trees still remaining in Connecticut at 450+ years old.  This white oak was last measured in 2021 to be 78ft tall, a 20.5ft trunk circumference, and 129ft of spread with branches reaching over 70ft.

The tree is one of the most picturesque in the state and has graced the Town of Granby’s seal since 1975.  Today the tree stands right up against Day Street with an open grassy area beside it.  A box truck hit the tree in 2011 removing a limb over the road and an early heavy snowstorm around Halloween 2011 greatly diminished its reach.  There isn’t anything to see beyond the tree, but this dominant old majestic is really all you need.  Generations of children have climbed its limbs and should continue to do so for many years to come.

An acorn from the tree was planted at the Salmon Brook Historical Society in 1981.

History:

The land was owned and farmed by eight generations of the Dewey family before all but the oak was sold for development in the 1970s.  The tree was honored by the Granby Land Trust with a plaque in 1977 and officially acquired in 1997 when it was purchased from Carolyn D. Anderson saving it from development thanks to overwhelming town support.
