History:
Donated to the Town of Norwich by six residents in 1906. From the park’s brochure:
Dr. John Rockwell was the first donor giving the city 70 acres surrounding Spaulding Pond. In 1908 the name Mohegan Park was chosen to pay tribute to Uncas, Sachem of the Mohegan Tribe who deeded the area to the first settlers of Norwich in 1659. By 1934, eighteen residents had gifted more than 300 acres to expand and create Mohegan Park. In 1938, the idea for the addition of a rose garden was introduced and built on approximately 2 acres at the Rockwell St. entrance to the park. The landscape architect was Thomas H. Desmond, designer of many wholesome, recreational city parks. The Norwich Rotary Memorial Rose Garden received national recognition when it was chosen to receive an award from Better Homes and Gardens and has acted as a test garden for All-American Rose Selection.
