Manship Park is the standard small town park with a playground and a multi-purpose ball field, but for our purposes serves as a boat launch into the Quinebaug River.
Boating
From the launch you’ll immediately pass under the Rt. 14 bridge. From here the current slows and the river makes five large, meandering turns. The best paddling is in the spring when the water is running well and there is a current to help pull you through. During the summer low water can make paddling feel sluggish and progress slow. The most common takeout is 5.6 miles downstream at Butts Bridge.
Hiking
A short 0.3 mile walking track goes around the ball field.
There is also short 400′ fisherman’s path along the banks of the river. There’s one nice view of the river, but really not worth exploring.
History:
Robert N. Manship passed away in 2000. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and had a 22 year career with the Connecticut State Police from 1953-1975.
