I’ve explored Hartman Park several times and still haven’t seen everything it has to offer. Beavers are very active in the small ponds near the main entrance. There are a number of lodges and they seem to be doing their best to dam the area around the mill site just below the outdoor classroom.
My first visit took me and friend from the main entrance south to the Young Preserve and the overlook above the Young Preserve entrance. It is a small knob that looks down into the forest, but is hard to justify calling it an overlook. Trails were hilly and varied but easy to follow and not too challenging.
My second visit took the 3 mile orange blazed loop which features some of the history of the area. The orange loop also has an overlook down the utility corridor (this one is justified). There is a self guided Heritage Trail booklet that gives great detail about the homesteads of the area and the trees that have since taken over.
The northern edge of the property hosts a section of the 13 mile Richard H. Goodwin Trail. I ran the the length of the the trail in March 2020 though I can’t say I caught Turtle or Snout Rocks nor the Cave Cliff.
History:
Donated to the Town of Lyme by John, Kelly, and Bill Hartman in 1988. See the Heritage Trail booklet for more information.
