Chestnut Hollow

Chestnut Hollow is one of those odd hidden town trails which has become a bit forgotten.  Formerly a Mohegan Land Trust property, I believe it is now a Hebron open space with minimal stewardship.  A short driveway leads to a small lot and overgrown picnic area.  An ‘old town pound’ is off to the right where in colonial times wayward animals were corralled until the owner could retrieve them.

The trail starts past the large kiosk built by RHAM students.  The trail map above is much more extensive than the on the ground reality.  On my last visit the trail heads out through an assorted tree and plant identification section.  The was one possible split near a seasonal stream, but I didn’t follow it.

The further in the trail goes the worse shape it gets with downed trees and faint trail.  Several times I thought I must have reached the end only to explore through the trees a bit more and find another blaze.  I believe the end of the loop at the southern end of the property travels around a large rock and returns on the same trail you took in.
