Mount Riga State Park is the most common starting point for hikers heading to the Appalachian Trail and Bear Mountain.  Bear Mountain is not within the park’s borders and neither is Mount Riga.  The actual summit (and the rest of the mountain) of Mount Riga is about 2.5 miles southwest of the state park.

The trailhead is along Under Mountain Rd and so is often called the Undermountain Trail.  Only about 1.5 miles fall within the property as it heads towards the Appalachian Trail junction.  Of course, the state park is so closely linked with Bear Mountain that they are often treated the same and so I must include that there is a 6 mile loop from that goes from the Undermountain to the Appalachian over Bear Mtn and just into Massachusetts before heading back.

Established as a state park in 1954.
