From the land trust site,
"The land was purchased from the estate of Madeline Cone for $45,000 with the help of an anonymous gift, a loan from the Nature Conservancy of Connecticut, donations from approximately 45 families in the Waterford Village area, a contribution from the New London Garden Club and members of the land trust. After the purchase of additional property for access to the Woodlands at the end of Greentree Drive, it was decided to dedicate the access to Dr. Joseph Pereira, founding member, which was done in a ceremony on June 4, 1980."
