John Muir Trail

John Muir Trail

The John Muir Trail runs 2.7 miles across Torrington connecting the blue blaze loop trails at Sunnybrook State Park and Burr Pond State Park.  The trail is rugged and less frequently traveled especially in its southern portion.

It starts along a branch of the Naugatuck River, climbs around Walnut Mountain, crosses several forest roads, and descends along the rocky outcrops of Burr Pond.

I hiked the trail in December 2022, though it doesn’t get featured much in this movie.  I’ll be back to do a more official version soon.

Section List

  • Sunnybrook State Park – 0.3 miles – From the parking area the trail climbs up to Newfield Road, crosses the bridge and descends rock stairs on the other side
  • Paugnut State Forest – 2 miles – Rugged terrain climbing around Walnut Mountain criss crossed with old forest roads
  • Burr Pond State Park – 0.4 miles – Access along the south side of the pond
