I hiked this Metacomet stretch of the 235 mile New England Trail in the fading light of an unexpected 18 mile day. Crossing over Route 6 was surprisingly easy. I’d expected to wait for heavy traffic but perhaps given the hour of day I was able to shoot right across to enter this stretch.
The trail immediately climbs very steeply to regain the ridge and provides a wood view down over the reservoir. This ridge type has now become very familiar to me and avoids what was previously a road walk down Poplar Hill Drive. The trail soon passes Eagle Rock, large beaked erratic and joins the abandoned Poplar Bars Road to descend off the ridge. The trail soon turns off the old wood road and skirts through the rocks and trees at the back of private property to reach Mountain Road.
