Town History |expand|

Darien was incorporated from lands in Stamford in May of 1820 making it the 122nd oldest town in the state.  The name comes from the isthmus of Darien.

Formerly the Parish of Middlesex, residents wanted to name the new town “Bellville,” in honor of Thaddeus Bell, the state assemblyman who championed the incorporation. He was opposed and the story goes that his visiting sailor friend, who had recently returned from the Isthmus of Darien (called now the Isthmus of Panama) saw a similarity between the two sites. The Isthmus of Darien lay between two oceans. The Town of Darien lay between the larger towns of Norwalk and Stamford.”
