Trail Map       Trails: 2.35 miles     Rating: ★★☆☆☆

I hiked into the Godard Preserve after exploring the adjacent Mary Edwards Mountain Property and the two may as well be joined together for a hike of about 4-5 miles depending on which loops you choose.

Hiking

  • Orange: 0.84 miles
  • Blue: 0.93 miles
  • Orange/Blue Connector: 0.29 miles
  • Red: 0.15 miles
  • Green: 0.18 miles

While the property doesn’t have any commanding views like its neighbor the varied loops have a charm of their own.  Coming in from the west entrance I descended the blue trail to meet a brook crossing.  The brook is a deep cut into a steep bank and was running well in an unseasonably warm winter.  I’m sure it rushes and tumbles in the spring.  I intended to do the full outer loop but walked right past the fork while admiring the water and unknowingly took the left following it until it met the orange trail after a stonewall.

I then took the orange/blue trail following a different brook upstream winding to and fro in another deep cut.  I stopped for a quick lunch at one of these picturesque curves and enjoyed the moment.  The trail very gradually climbed to meet the orange trail before descending again along the backside of the loop through rocky forest.

I completed the loop missing the boulder noted on the trail map which is along the green trail.

History:

Preserved in 1997.
