Mill Brook Park is an absolutely beautiful postage stamp of a park. Parking behind old Ackert Hall the park follows a thick stonewall into a open field with a gazebo, arched white bridges, and birdhouses dotting the trees. A signboard at the opposite corner explains the history of the park and shows a picture of when Mill Brook was actually a clear pond.
Today that clear pond is a small forest with a gentle brook. A short trail heads off into these woods and features a book walk for kids. On my visit the story was Jack and the Beanstalk with pages distributed along the length of the trail. After passing through thick reeds the trail ends behind the Morgan Silk Mill with a fenced in dam dating back to 1870.
I’m sure the fence prevents vandalism, but it would be interesting to get up close to the tiny fall where the brook goes under the former mill.
History:
Purchased by the town in 2004 the land had formerly been a wood lot for local mill owners even prior to the incorporation of the town.
