    East Haddam Town Park

70.16 acres in East Haddam, CT

Parking: Cul-de-sac near 127 Daniel Peck Rd, East Haddam, CT

Trail Map           Trails: 2.6 miles      Rating: ★★☆☆☆

The Sabine Reserve is a gradually hilly property featuring views of Moodus Reservoir and old homestead foundations along the abandoned section of Daniel Peck Road.

    Hiking

From the parking area at the end of Daniel Peck Road the White Trail heads downhill on a washed out country road lined by stone walls.  The blue trail loop soon splits off to the left.

The blue trail is a short loop with a brief wet area and a bridge over a small stream. The loop is pretty filled with roots and the backside was rerouted in 2017 pulling it away from the property edge.  If you look through the trees here you should be able to see the red blazed trail on the adjacent William Jezek Memorial Preserve, though for unknown reasons the two trail systems do not connect.  There are also a pair of adirondacks (from a hiking by a local Eagle Scout) with a view of the reservoir and an old deer stand among the trees.

Off the blue loop is access to a short section of the red trail which rejoins the white at a stream crossing.  The red trail then winds through rolling forest and around a marshy area passing two old foundations.  At the far end of the property the trail rejoins the white blazed Daniel Peck Road to return to the parking area.

    History

Preserved in February 2008 when the Town of East Haddam purchased it from Charles Sabine Jr for $500,000.

In 2016-7 an Eagle Scout project created two new trails on the Reserve (likely red and orange) as well as a blue relocation (?).
