If you’re looking for an out of the way easy hike that you’ll have all to yourself, Bear Hill is likely the spot for you. However, as this is also a hunting area it is recommended to wear orange especially September – December.
There isn’t much to see at Bear Hill besides the old barn just off the parking lot. The main loop trail starts from either corner of the parking lot and heads off around the fields for about 1.75 miles. The loop is partially gravel and partially overgrown depending on when you visit. On my mid-July visit the various grass and weeds were ankle high but interspersed with tons of blue flowering chicory.
The overgrowth gets a little worse in a few stretches, but I found it easily passable. Hiking it was a bit dull, but I had the whole place to myself and imagine it is often this way.
I have not yet found an origin for the name Bear Hill (though it’s easy to assume) or when the state purchased the property (at least pre-1983).
