Trail Map        Trails: 0.9 miles       Rating: ★★☆☆☆

This is a bit of placeholder page as this trail is so new I don’t think Litchfield Avenue Trail is its official name.  I believe the Town of Killingly has had a conservation easement on this property for years and I suspect some version of this trail has existed for awhile, but real work got underway in Fall 2021 and this property was highlighted in Walktober 2022.

I wasn’t exactly sure where parking for this property was since there isn’t a trailhead kiosk yet, but I saw a couple promising shoulder parking spots at 535, 575, and 519 on this road.  It turns out that all three of these work with access to the trail thought I’m glad I parked across from the Fire Academy since it seems like the best starting point.

The trail heads right down towards the Quinebaug River and follows the bank upstream.  This trail is blazed blue (a bit over blazed) and provides at least two good views of the River.  The trail then navigates a narrow stretch between a marshy area and the steep bank to the road that is well handled and interesting.

At about 0.34 miles the trail splits into a loop which works its way through dense barberry and other thick low growth.  There was one striking old pine that snapped off 15ft up and a nice stonewall at the backside of the loop. In addition to the blue blazes there is also strips of cloth flagging the trail.  The loop portion is 0.25 miles and I’m surprised it doesn’t show up better on the track of my hike above.

The trail rejoins the river and the trail back to the parking.
